PNP spox: CIDG agents in Senate to prepare for Trillanes arrest

Agents of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) are in the Senate grounds to “pre-position” themselves in case a warrant of arrest is issued against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Wednesday.

“The CIDG is there to pre-position themselves just in case a warrant of arrest is issued,” PNP Spokesperson Senior Supt. Benigno Durana Jr. said in a press briefing.

“It’s a tactical, strategic move of the CIDG to be there so that they can smoothly carry out the arrest if the warrant of arrest is issued,” he said.

Durana added that the CIDG agents are also in the area to assist personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) deployed in the Senate.

“The presence of the CIDG (agents) in the Senate premises is just to assist our military counterparts as they perform based on the order of the court martial…and at the same time to preposition our personnel,” he said.

Asked about the extent of “assistance” to be extended the AFP, Durana said the CIDG can help in terms of the “legality of the matter” and provide some inputs on how the military should execute whatever order they receive.

“One thing is very clear sa (in the) Philippine National Police. We will implement the law without fear or favor but within the bounds of the law,” he said.

Durana said authorities will arrest Trillanes as soon as they receive the warrant of arrest. He said the court has yet to release the warrant.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier revoked the amnesty granted to Trillanes for his involvement in the 2003 Oakwood mutiny and the 2007 Manila Peninsula siege.

Jonathan Malaya, spokesperson of the Department of Interior and Local Government, said on Tuesday that the Department of Justice has already applied for the arrest warrant with the Makati Regional Trial Court. /muf
