SAN JUAN — A pair of early-morning earthquakes have shaken Puerto Rico and parts of the Caribbean.

A preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey says the first quake had an estimated magnitude of 4.9. It was centered in the Atlantic Ocean about 40 miles (60 kilometers) north of the town of Hatillo.

Geologist Frances Perez of the University of Puerto Rico Seismic Network tells The Associated Press that people throughout out the island felt the quake, which struck around 1 a.m. local time. Perez said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The USGS says the second quake about a half hour later had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7. It was centered about 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of St. Martin.
