Maderazo’s ‘Sharp Edges’: Media veteran writes for Inquirer

JAKE MADERAZO

Starting on June 5 and every Tuesday, Inquirer Metro will run “Sharp Edges,” a weekly column by broadcast and print journalist Jake Maderazo.

Expect the 40-year media veteran, now the station manager of dzIQ Radyo Inquirer 990 AM, to offer a fresh, cutting take on current issues affecting the everyday Filipino and a keen takeaway for readers looking for more juice behind the news.

“Sharp edges” will tackle sensitive people-oriented issues, including local and national government corruption, police shenanigans and environmental concerns.

Expect investigative pieces, blind items, wake-up calls and real-deal public service.

Maderazo was vice president of ABS-CBN TV News and Current Affairs Group, where he spent more than three decades writing commentary, honing talents, and producing award-winning content like “Hoy Gising!,” the network’s citizen action line; “Mission Expose,” a hard-hitting segment of the TV Patrol evening newscast; the interactive public affairs show “Dong Puno Live” and the top-rating morning show, “Alas Singko Y Media,” among others.

He supervised the operations of Sarimanok News Channel and successfully transformed it into what is now called the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC).

Turnaround expert

A recipient of numerous Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas Golden Dove and Star Awards citations, Maderazo
is considered a “turnaround expert” in the network, credited with rehabilitating low-rating programs.

Earlier in his career, outside the TV and radio studios, he ran horseracing publications and wrote columns in The Journal and Daily Express. The dawn of online journalism in the 1990s saw him establishing abs-cbnnews.com.

Maderazo also currently writes a column, “Wag Kang Pikon,” which appears in Inquirer Bandera every Monday.
