Aunt appeals for help for kids of slain journalist

Bacolod City — As the nation marked yesterday the second anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre, the sister of one of the victims appealed for help for his children.

Teresita Maravilla, a sister of broadcast journalist Bart Maravilla of Bombo Radyo, one of the 32 massacre victims, said Monday that the past months have been trying times for her family.

Teresita, who lives in barangay 6 in this city, said she has been taking care of four of her brother’s children — Colleen, 16; Jashen, 15; Josh, 11; and Jinx Cyrus, 7.

She said she makes a living buying and selling scrap iron. She added that it has been difficult to make ends meet. Teresita said she hoped they could get some assistance.

She said Bart’s youngest child, John Clarence, 5, has been living with her other brother in Cadiz City.

Aside from Maravilla, another journalist from Negros Occidental, Henry Araneta, a correspondent of radio dzRH, was also among the Maguindanao massacre victims.

To commemorate the massacre, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines Negros Occidental and the Communications Department and the Inter-Disciplinary Studies of the University of St. La Salle will hold a photo exhibit at the USLS lobby 4:30 p.m. today, NUJP-Negros Occidental interim chairman Julius Mariveles said on Monday. /INQUIRER
