Quake precedes opening of polling in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A magnitude 4.4 quake jolted the city at 6:12 a.m. as voters started trooping to their precincts for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.

Engineer Rommel Labayog of the local Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said intensity 2 was felt in the city.

He said the tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 55 kilometers with the epicenter traced 39 kilometers northwest of Manukan in Zamboanga del Norte.

No damage or aftershock was expected.

Monday’s quake came about seven hours after a much stronger tremor that was recorded off Sarangani town in Davao Occidental near midnight Sunday.

The magnitude 5.1 Sarangani quake was felt at intensity 2 in the cities of Davao and General Santos. No damage was also recorded in Sunday’s quake. /cbb
