The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has said that it would coordinate with local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila in creating a unified and efficient anti-smoking ordinance.
“Public participation is highly encouraged to further strengthen the effectiveness of this policy. We must join hand in hand towards the goal to have a cleaner surroundings and healthier people,” MMDA Health, Public Safety and Environmental Protection Office Director Loida Alzona said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Aside from assisting in training enforcers and conducting of communications development workshops as well as other capability-building activities, MMDA would help in the enforcement and monitoring of activities related to the ordinance.
Meanwhile, MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said that the agency recognizes the contribution of Taguig’s LGU for the betterment of health and sanitation in capital region.
Taguig’s city council recently passed City Ordinance Number 15, a local anti-smoking order, which was approved by Mayor Lani Cayetano.
“We are glad that the 16 cities and one municipality in Metro Manila is one with the MMDA’s effort to provide a cleaner air for all living in the metropolis. Taguig is one of those cities which are leading the way towards a smoke-free Metro Manila through their smoke free ordinance,” Lim said. /je
