Guevarra vows to be fair in deciding Sister Fox’s case

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he would be “fair” in deciding the deportation case of Australian nun Patricia Fox, who was ordered held on April 16 by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The 71-year-old nun was taken from her home by immigration agents and held for a day last week.

She faces possible deportation after she was accused of joining antigovernment protest rallies in violation of her missionary visa.

“While she was released from temporary detention, Sister Patricia’s case is still undergoing investigation,” Guevarra told reporters on Monday.

He said the government would apply immigration laws regardless of Fox’s association with militant groups.

“Our action will be based on the factual findings of the Bureau of Immigration. Our immigration laws shall be fairly and uniformly applied,” Guevarra said. —Dona Z. Pazzibugan
