The restoration of the 937-lineal meter seawall along Manila Bay is nearing completion, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Friday.
In a statement, DPWH National Capital Region Director Melvin Navarro said six of seven phases of the restoration project, which was given a P296.5 million budget, have already been completed.
“The seawall project involves the construction of a protective seawall reinforced with steel bars that will absorb and lessen the force of waves and deflect the water towards the sea,” the statement read.
“It also involves the installation of storm drains and positioning of armor rocks,” the statement added.
Once finished, the seawall would protect Manila Bay from storm surges during typhoons.
Pathways along the seawall would also serve as easy access to tourists who want to get a sight of the sunset at Manila Bay.
The DPWH said it was also mulling to include a joggers’ lane along the seawall to encourage fitness and wellness activities for Manila residents and tourists since it was also a site for sporting events like triathlons, marathons, cycling, and fun runs. /muf
