A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Cagayan before dawn Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake hit 39 kilometers southeast of Gonzaga, Cagayan, at 3:43 a.m., the Phivolcs said.

Intensity I was recorded in Santiago City, Isabela, and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs said it did not expect any damage from the quake.

The tremor had a depth of 23 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, Phivolcs said.

It was followed by a 2.4 magnitude aftershock at 5:05 a.m. /cbb
