Misericordia of Manila, a charitable institution of laymen, was founded on April 16, 1594.

Its complete name, Santa Hermandad de la Misericordia (Brotherhood of Mercy), was inspired by the Portuguese Casa de Misericordia (House of Mercy).


The Misericordia played an important role as the provider of social assistance and a major source of credit for the community of Manila during the Spanish period. —Marielle Medina
