Army foils NPA plan to burn road-building equipment
DIGOS CITY – The military on Sunday said it foiled an attempt by communist rebels to burn heavy equipment being used for various road projects here by driving them away from Barangay Goma on Good Friday.
Lieutenant Colonel Rhojun Rosales, commander of the 39th Infantry Battalion, told the Inquirer that soldiers were sent to Barangay Goma, a hinterland village here, following reports that New People’s Army (NPA) rebels had converged there to stage attacks against construction companies building roads in the city.
He said the soldiers clashed with the rebels for around 30 minutes. One soldier, identified as Corporal Geronimo Calonse Jr. was wounded along with a still undetermined number of rebels, Rosales said.
He said his men were still pursuing the fleeing rebels on Sunday. /cbb
