This Week’s Milestones: April 1-7, 2018

April 3, 1993

Clark Development Corp. (CDC) was created as the operating and implementing arm of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority by virtue of Executive Order No. 80, signed by then President Fidel Ramos. CDC was tasked to manage the conversion of Clark into a special economic zone, following the withdrawal of US military bases from Clark. The special economic zone was seen to provide employment and livelihood opportunities to locals when Clark becomes a civil aviation complex and a tourism, trade and business center in Luzon.

April 5, 1580

The province of Pangasinan was organized into a political subdivision, known as “alcaldias mayores.” It was only in 2010 that Pangasinan had been able to decide on a founding date for the province. Since 1989, locals have been celebrating “Pangasinan Day” on Nov. 13. Historical records showed that Pangasinan became an alcaldia mayores in 1580. The provincial board chose April 5 as the founding day because it was on that day in 1572 that Pangasinan was established as an encomienda, a labor system employed by the Spanish crown during the Spanish colonization.
