The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has sentenced an unidentified man to death in the UAE after he killed his wife with acid over alleged infidelity.

The sentence was handed down after the wife’s family refused to grant pardon to the accused, who offered them blood money, the Khaleej Times reported on Friday. Her family also filed a claim for damages amounting to Dh20,000 (around P284,450)  for her death and bringing harm to their children.

Court documents showed the wife filed for divorce from the man after she discovered he had been having an extramarital affair for the second time. However, it was not granted as her husband was in prison at the time for drug-related cases.

He then confronted and accused her of committing adultery too when he was released in February 2016. But having no proof of the affair, he instead poured acid on her with two of their sons also being burned when they tried to rescue her.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital in Al Mafraq and later flown to Germany, where she died due to second- and third-degree burns in her body.

Police said the man tried to kill himself twice by hanging as he was awaiting his sentence.  Katrina Hallare /ra
