MMDA: 53,000 to get summons for Edsa bus lane violation

During the first three months of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s reimplementation of the bus lane policy along Edsa, more than 53,000 private cars and buses were caught violating the lane restriction through the agency’s no-contact apprehension policy.

Motorists tagged for the violation should expect to receive summons this week, According to Jojo Garcia, the MMDA’s assistant general manager for planning.

From Nov. 21, 2017, to Jan. 30, Garcia said, a total of 53,253 drivers violated the bus lane policy. Of this number, 41,294 were private motorists.

Both private motorists and bus drivers are fined P500 for each violation, while the latter also facing an additional P200 fine for reckless driving.

This means that if all of the violators during the three-month period would pay their fine, the agency can collect more than P29 million.

Under the bus lane policy, buses are limited to using the two outermost lanes of Edsa. Private cars can use these two lanes at least 100 meters before exiting the major thoroughfare. —JOVIC YEE
