2 MRT-3 trains break down, affecting 600 passengers

Within two hours, two Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3) trains broke down on Saturday afternoon, affecting more than 600 passengers.

At around 2:18 p.m., a northbound train unloaded 450 passengers at Boni Station after it encountered an electrical failure in one of its motors. The MRT 3 management said in an advisory that the incident may have been triggered by worn-out electrical subcomponents.

Two hours later, a second train unloaded 225 passengers at the southbound platform of the Quezon Avenue station after its doors failed to work.

Commuters’ leaning on or forcing open the doors are among the reasons cited by the MRT 3 management why train doors fail.

All affected passengers were able to transfer to the next train in under six minutes. As of 4 p.m., only 11 trains are in operation in the country’s busiest train line, leaving passengers to wait for almost eight minutes at the platform. /jpv
