Honduran congressman indicted in US for drug trafficking

 MEXICO CITY — A Honduran legislator has been charged in a United States federal court with participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy and related weapons offenses.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration said in a statement that it is seeking the extradition of congressman Fredy Najera Montoya.

Raymond Donovan, in charge of DEA special operations, said that “Najera used his position in the Honduran Congress to facilitate huge amounts of drug trafficking and corruption, while using security teams possessing dangerous and deadly weapons.”

The anti-drug agency said on Friday that Najera supported multiple drug trafficking organizations that received plane and boat loads of cocaine from Colombia that later made it to the US.

Public officials, including members of the congress, took bribes to ensure safe passage, it added.

Najera has denied any association with drug trafficking in the past. /kga
