At least two senators have thumbed down the idea of legalizing same sex marriage in the country, one saying it might not get the approval of Congress.

Senate Majority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III predicted that such proposal would not fly in Congress.

“(It) won’t fly,” Sotto said in a message.

“Sogie lang hindi makalusot, yun pa?” he said, referring to the sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (Sogie) bill, which has been pending in the Senate.

Sotto also pointed out that legalizing same-sex marriage would be in violation of the Family Code.

“Malabo,” he said in a separate text message when asked about the possibility the proposal could get Congress’ approval.

“Same sex union should be enough. (It) does not need law,” the Majority Leader added.

Neophyte Senator Joel Villanueva also opposed the idea.

“I am against same sex marriage. Sacred ang marriage. Hindi yan usaping estado lang,” Villanueva said in another text message as he stressed the need to protect the sanctity of marriage.

“Marapat yata na ipaubaya sa simbahan yan,” he added.

Sotto and Villanueva both belong to the majority bloc in the Senate.

President Rodrigo Duterte himself revived the issue on same-sex marriage when he spoke before the 7th LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Davao over the weekend.

“I am for (same-)sex marriage if that is the trend of the modern times. If that will add to your happiness, I am for it … who am I … you know, whatever makes the person happy, I will give it. Why should I hold it back?” Duterte said.

“Why impose a morality that is no longer working and almost passé. It’s leftover rice,” he added./ac
