A Chinese daredevil gave his last death-defying act in a stunt gone wrong, resulting in his death after falling from the 62nd story of a building.
Local Chinese media The Beijing News, through Channel News Asia, reported on Monday that 26-year-old Wu Yongning fell from the 62-story building Huayuan Centre in Hunan, China, back in November.
Police were notified of Wu’s death when his girlfriend called on Nov. 9, telling them that she was worried after he had not gone back after a stunt. She initially thought that they arrested him, but confirmed that he had died.
Before his death, Wu was last seen climbing up 20 stories to the roof, as the elevator only served up to the first 40 floors of the building.
Feng Shengliang, Wu’s step-uncle, told The Beijing News that he had set his eyes on a 100,000 yuan (approximately P288,000) prize in a rooftopping challenge. He would have used the money to propose to his girlfriend.
“He needed the money for the wedding, and for medical treatment for his ailing mother,” Feng said in the report.
Wu was first known to be a film extra before settling in his rooftopping career. He had had 301 videos of himself on top of different skyscrapers across China, and posted them on the social media site Sina Weibo. Katrina Hallare /ra
