‘Those who stand with the truth should not be oppressed’ – Sereno

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno said on Thursday that “those who stand with the truth should not be oppressed.”

In a short speech after the Mass organized by her supporters at the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice in the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, Sereno expressed surprise that her battle to keep her post as top magistrate would be a fight she would share with the Filipino people.

Sereno then thanked the people who closely follow her impeachment case at the House of Representatives.

“I didn’t expect that Filipinos would share my struggles… that it would be in the hearts of Filipino families,” she said, adding that “those who stand with the truth should not be oppressed.”

Sereno stressed that despite the usual silence that has characterized the judiciary, she had brought many reforms in the system, such as the introduction of electronic courts.

Several groups gathered Thursday morning at UP Diliman to show support for the beleaguered chief magistrate, who was the subject of an impeachment complaint filed by Atty. Larry Gadon before the House committee on justice.    /kga
