Kanlaon Volcano spews ash, logs 28 volcanic quakes
MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental had seven ash emissions and 28 volcanic earthquakes on New Year’s Day, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs said the ash emissions lasted from 23 to 264 minutes, while the volcanic earthquakes lasted 10 to 282 minutes.
Phivolcs said the ash emissions likewise generated voluminous plumes 400 meters high that drifted west.
Continuous degassing with occasional ash emission was also observed in Kanlaon Volcano.

Article continues after this advertisementAccording to Phivolcs, these parameters were recorded from midnight January 1 until midnight January 2.
The volcano remained under alert level 3, which indicates intensified or magmatic unrest.
Hence, flights in the vicinity of the volcano is still prohibited.
Phivolcs also reminded the public of hazards such as sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic fall, rockfall, and lahar during heavy rains.
