Navotas traffic aide shot after stopping 2 men on bike

A traffic enforcer employed by the Navotas City government was wounded on Wednesday morning after being shot by one of two motorcycle-riding men whom he had flagged down for not wearing helmets.

Alvin Garcia, 43-year-old member of the city’s traffic and parking management office, brought himself to Tondo Medical Center after sustaining a gunshot wound in the left side of his body, said SPO1 Allan Ogatia, the Navotas police investigator on the case.

Around 11:30 a.m., Garcia was directing traffic on Virgo Drive in Barangay North Bay Boulevard South when he stopped two men on a Kawasaki Enduro.

Aside from having no helmets on, the men were using a motorbike that had no license plate and failed to produce proper registration papers.

As Garcia was about to issue a violation ticket, one of the men pulled a gun and aimed it at the traffic aide. Garcia, who also had a bike nearby, tried to escape but was shot before he could drive off.

Garcia was still confined in the hospital while the assailants remained at large and unidentified at press time, according to Ogatia.

In a statement, Navotas Mayor John Reynald Tiangco condemned the incident and promised to shoulder Garcia’s medical expenses.
