The contributions of the late Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago to the nation “is beyond question,” Malacañang said Thursday, as it welcomed moves to confer the Quezon Service Cross to her.

“The Office of the President welcomes moves to confer the late Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago the Quezon Service Cross,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella in a Palace briefing.

Senators Grace Poe and Sonny Angara filed two separate Senate resolutions on Wednesday to posthumously accord Santiago the highest civilian service award.

The two senators cited the late senator’s exemplary contribution to the country.

The Quezon Service Cross, the highest national recognition of outstanding civilian service in the country in memory of the late President Manuel Quezon, is granted by the President with the concurrence of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“The late senator’s contribution to the country is beyond question. The President highly respects the lady,” Abella said.

The Palace official said it was waiting to receive the resolution from the Senate.

Santiago’s first death anniversary will be on Friday, September 29. /cbb
