Series of quakes hit Bukidnon-Lanao del Sur area

At least four earthquakes ranging from magnitude 4 to 5.4 shook the Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur area in a five-hour period on Sunday, September 24, 2017.

The first quake that measured 4.4 magnitude struck at 1:48 a.m. some 3 kilometers north of Wao, Lanao de Sur, according to the website of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The second and strongest temblor hit the same general area at 4:47 a.m. It was measured at 5.4 magnitude and was felt at Intensity VI in Kalilangan, Bukidnon and Intensity III in Cagayan de Oro City, the Phivolcs website said.

The third quake at magnitude 4 was recorded at 5:18 a.m.

The last earthquake at magnitude 4.1 was felt at 5:30 a.m. seven kilometers north of Don Carlos, Bukidnon.

At least four more quakes measuring between magnitude 3.1 to 3.8 were also recorded in the area between 5:19 a.m. and 6:33 a.m.

The Phivolcs said all the earthquakes were tectonic in origin and occurred at depths ranging from two kilometers to 14 kilometers. The institute did not expect any damage resulting from the temblors. /cbb
