Myanmar to free more prisoners – officials

/ 12:43 PM November 13, 2011

YANGON – Myanmar is to declare a new prisoner amnesty on Monday that will include political detainees, government officials in the military-dominated country said Sunday.

“Some prisoners will be released on Monday,” an official who did not wish to be named told AFP, without giving further details.

Another official added that “some prisoners of conscience” would be among those freed.

A mass amnesty in October failed to free most key dissidents, disappointing the opposition and observers who had hoped the country would release all its roughly 2,000 political detainees.
