Landslide kills 2 teens in Rizal, hundreds evacuate in Calabarzon

Two minors have been killed in a landslide in Taytay, Rizal while hundreds in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) region were asked to evacuate due to the strong rains and wind accompanying Tropical Depression “Maring.”

The house of the two casualties, identified as Jude Bundal, 17, and his brother Justinne, 14, was struck by the landslide at around 4:00 a.m. in Hapay na Mangga, Brgy. Dolores sa Taytay, Rizal, DZBB reported.

Meanwhile, the parents together with their two other children survived the incident, the report added.

“Ito ay nasa tabi ng creek. Mga informal settlers itong nasa bahay. Nasa tabi sila ng creek at natamaan ng landslide at unfortunately merong dalawang magkapatid, isang 14 years old at 17 years old parehong lalaki ang namatay dun sa landslide,” Elmer Espiritu of Taytay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management office said in an interview with DZBB.

Rizal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council officer Loel Malonzo said the provincial government ordered the preemptive evacuation of residents in areas prone to flooding and landslide.

Malonzo said evacuation of residents continued in Taytay, Angono and San Mateo.

In Cavite, a woman reportedly went missing after a landslide hit a village in Silang town. In Barangay Adlas, several houses made of light materials were also reportedly “washed away” by heavy rains and wind.

Cavite Gov. Jesus Crispin Remulla said the following areas were flooded: Barangays Magdalo and Balsahan in Kawit; all villages in Noveleta; Barangays Bagbag and Ligtong in Rosario; and Barangays Labac, Mabulo, Bancaan and Ibayo Silang in Naic.

Authorities are monitoring the strong current in Maragondon River in Ternate town.

In Laguna province, 157 families sought refuge in schools, barangay halls and churches due to flooding, according to Rommel Palacol of the Laguna Action Center.

Ankle- to knee-high floods were reported in the areas of San Pedro City (Barangays Cuyab, San Antonio, San Vicente, Sto. Nino),Cabuyao City, Calamba City (Barangays Parian and Looc), Calauan, Nagcarlan, Kalayaan, Paete, Siniloan and Mabitac.

In Batangas, 190 families also sought shelter in evacuation centers in the towns of Bauan (Barangays Manghinao, Sto. Domingo, San Roque, Poblacion and Aplaya), San Pascual and Malvar, and Batangas City. je
