A Magdalo congressman who filed a failed impeachment bid against President Rodrigo Duterte called on the public to be heroes in their own way, especially during these trying times.

In a statement to commemorate National Heroes’ Day, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano, a vocal critic of the administration’s war on drugs, called on the public to “remember today and always the sacrifices of our forefathers who braved death and persecution in the name of freedom, justice, and nation.”

“Let them serve as an enduring inspiration to the present generation of Filipinos that what and who we are right now is not without a blood spilled of those ordinary men who made extraordinary feats in our history,” said the former Marine captain who figured in the botched Oakwood military mutiny.

To underscore the need to make sacrifices like the country’s heroes during these challenging times, Alejano said: “Ang ating bayan ay nasasadlak sa maraming hamon. Ang panahon ay nananawagan sa ating lahat na ordinaryong mamamayan na handang isakripisyo ang komportableng buhay para tahakin ang landas ng Kabayanihan.”

He urged the public to become heroes of their own rights and “take up the cudgels for our people and country.”

“People are often desperate in looking for heroes to stand up for them, to take up the cudgels for them. Some ended up frustrated and hopeless. Nakakalimutan natin na ang bayani na ating hinahanap ay matatagpuan sa ating mga sarili,” Alejano said.

Alejano is the author of the impeachment complaint against Duterte that was dismissed by the House justice committee for lack of substance.
