A dismissed member of the Philippine Navy who reportedly threatened to shoot bystanders in Pasay City was killed in a police chase that ended in Makati on Thursday night.
Alan Ricafort was shot dead after being cornered by a team from the Malibay station of the Pasay police, who were earlier alerted by a concerned citizen.
Case investigator PO2 Noel Burden said Ricafort was brandishing a .45-caliber pistol at the corner of Edsa and E. Rodriguez Street when he spotted and fired at the responding police team, hitting one officer, PO2 Jerry Jubail, in the stomach.
To flee, Ricafort forced a female pizza delivery rider at gunpoint to take him as her motorbike passenger.
Jubail’s colleagues commandeered a private motorcycle to go after Ricafort.
The motorbike carrying the suspect sped toward Makati City but lost control as it took a sharp U-turn under the Magallanes flyover, throwing off both the pizza delivery rider and Ricafort.
At this point, the suspect tried to hijack a container van but was shot dead as he was about to climb onto the vehicle, Burden said.
Jubail was hospitalized and was declared in stable condition .
According to Burden, Ricafort had the rank of Seaman Second Class when he was dismissed from the Navy last year after testing positive for drug use.—DEXTER CABALZA
