The Makati City government has collected over P33 million in fines for traffic violation tickets issued from January to June this year.
Based on records from the Ordinance Violation Receipt Redemption Management Division (OVRRMD) of the Makati Public Safety Department (PSD), over P29.6 million in fines were also collected from July to December last year.
More than 144,000 traffic violations have been recorded by the PSD on the first year of the administration of Mayor Abby Binay, who ordered intensified operations to promote road discipline.
“As the number of motor vehicles using our roads continues to increase, we must ensure that traffic laws are strictly observed by motorists to keep our streets safe and speed up traffic flow as well,” Binay said on Wednesday.
In just the first two weeks of July, the PSD has recorded a total of 7,719 traffic violations, with disobedience to traffic control signs and signals topping the list at 1,325 tickets.
Under the Makati City Traffic Code, disobedience to traffic signs is penalized with a penalty of P2,500 or the suspension of the driver’s license, or both.
