A couple was killed by a still unidentified man inside their house in Pasig City even as President Rodrigo Duterte promised that his war on drugs would continue in his second State of the Nation Address.

Solino Nagares Jr., 48, a construction worker, and Sarah Jane Baesa, 45, were shot dead by a lone gunman who barged into their house on Jacinto Street, Villa Reyes compound in Barangay Bambang, at 4:35 pm.

A report to Senior Supt. Orlando Yebra Jr., Pasig police chief, said the couple died on the spot.

Barangay Chair Reynaldo Samson Jr. said the two were on the watch list as drug pushers aside from having spent time in jail.

Although both surrendered under “Oplan Tokhang,” officials had received reports that the couple was still involved in illegal activities, Samson said.

“Ask people from this barangay. I did not fail in advising and guiding them. May this be a lesson to our people who continue to do illegal activities. I cannot say who are the perpetrators or if these were done by vigilantes or drug syndicates or the police. But may this serve as a warning that our president is serious in the campaign against drugs,” he added. —Jodee A. Agoncillo
