Makati records 58,753 traffic violations from January to May

The Makati City Public Safety Department (PSD) has recorded over 58,000 traffic violations from January to May, with disobedience to traffic control signs and signals topping the list at 15,349.

Based on the report of the PSD’s Ordinance Violation Receipt Redemption Management Division, a total of 58,753 violations were recorded due to on-street operations and the strict enforcement of traffic rules.

“Our traffic enforcers and other PSD personnel are under strict orders to apprehend disobedient motorists and conduct daily on-street operations against illegal parking, illegal terminals and other violations that cause traffic congestion within the city,” Mayor Abby Binay said in a statement.

Under the city’s traffic code, disobedience to traffic control signals carries a fine of P2,500. The driver’s license of a private motorist may also be suspended as well as the franchise of public utility vehicles.

Other violations recorded were disregarding lane markings (10,607), illegal parking (6,966), motor vehicles obstructing roads/stalled vehicles (6,582) and nonuse of seat belts (3,510).

A total of 395 people were also cited for reckless driving, 391 for operating “colorum” (without a legal franchise) passenger vehicles and 13 for operating illegal terminals.

Binay said complaints against abusive drivers may be posted on the Facebook page “My Makati” or on Twitter accounts @MakatiTraffic and @Mayora_Abby.
