Did You Know: Jesuits take over Escuela Pia

05:00 AM July 12, 2017

On July 12, 1859, the Jesuits returned to the Philippines for the first time since their expulsion by King Carlos III on April 2, 1767 over claims of being unpatriotic.

From their expulsion, they brought new liberal ideas in education which they inculcated in the educational institutions they built.

The Jesuits took over Escuela Pia, a municipal school, that later evolved into Ateneo de Manila University which they still run to this day. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
