Hit men kill Manila village chair, take P100K necklace

A barangay chair in Manila was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants early on Monday morning.

Barangay 670 chair Dante Gonzalo was building a wooden table in front of the bar he owned on Mabini Street, Ermita, when four men approached him around 4:30 a.m.

SPO1 Joseph Kabigting of the Manila Police District’s homicide section said two of the four suspects wearing face masks and ball caps shot Gonzalo in the head and chest.

Quoting eyewitnesses, the officer said one of the attackers was seen snatching the victim’s necklace worth P100,000 as he lay bleeding, before they fled on their motorbikes.

The 71-year-old Gonzalo was later pronounced dead at Manila Doctors Hospital. The motive behind the attack remained under investigation. —Faith Brown
