Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Monday honored the country’s fallen heroes in celebration of 119th Philippine Independence Day.

“Our country remembers today all those who have fought for and continue to fight for our country’s freedom and sovereignty. We celebrate the valor of our fallen heroes present and past, all of who sacrificed lives and wealth, safety and comfort,” Sereno said in a statement.

“June 12, 1898 was a day our forefathers, armed only with an indomitable faith in the Filipino’s destiny, fought for and won at great cost, they charged though the most difficult obstacles so that our nation could live free. Their DNA lives on today in all those who continue to give all they have to ensure that our nation remains free,” the chief justice added.

Sereno was supposed to raise the flag at the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan but begged off to prepare for the preliminary conference and the three day oral argument on three martial law petitions. JPV
