LUCENA CITY, Philippines – Two policemen were injured when firecrackers they were about to dispose of accidentally exploded in Boac, Marinduque on Wednesday (May 10), police said Thursday.

Chief Insp. Yancy Sapio, Boac police chief, said the policemen were about to start the disposal of 82 packs of “five star” firecrackers — each pack containing 100 pieces – in a plastic tumbler at the river bank in Barangay Santol around 3:10 p.m. when they exploded.

Two policemen, Senior Police Officer 2 Nelson Ricohermoso and Police Officer 2 Jeffrey Gutierrez, sustained injuries on different parts of the body and were brought to the Dr. Damian Reyes Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The blast also damaged a police mobile car and a fire truck placed on standby for the firecrackers’ disposal.

The firecrackers were left abandoned by illegal vendors and recovered by policemen  way back in November 2015.  SFM/rga
