LUCENA CITY — Two juvenile green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) were released into the Lamon Bay fronting the island town of Alabat in Quezon province on Monday, police said.

In a post on the Alabat police Facebook page, police said the two marine turtles were rescued by fisherman Freddie Aceron in Barangay Balungay after he saw the sea creatures trapped in his fishnet.

Aceron contacted the local office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, which sent personnel to attend to the rescued turtles.

Several photos showed a BFAR employee, assisted by policemen, examined the turtles before these were returned to the bay.

The green sea turtle is listed as “endangered” (facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. JE
