Today, April 7, is the 146th birth anniversary of writer-historian Epifanio de los Santos. Born in 1871, De los Santos served as associate editor of La Independencia and cofounded other patriotic newspapers like La Libertad, El Renacimiento, La Democracia and La Patria. A member of the Malolos Congress, he also served as Nueva Ecija’s first governor in 1902, technical director of the Philippine Census in 1918, and director of the Philippine Library Museum in 1925. He died on April 18, 1928, at age 57. In 1959, the country’s busiest highway, Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa), was renamed in his honor. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
