LUCENA CITY – Suspected communist rebels burned the heavy equipment of a private road contractor in Quezon province on Wednesday evening, the military said Thursday.

Lt. General Ferdinand Quidilla, commander of the Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command (Solcom), said  suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels burned a dump truck, two cement mixers and one bulldozer in Sitio Centro in Barangay Casay in San Francisco town around 10:30 p.m.

He said the Rapid Foremost Construction Company was building a circumferential road project in the area.

The military alleged that the company refused to pay so-called revolutionary taxes being imposed by the NPA which led to the destruction of the equipment.

Quidilla said that due to the failure of the communist guerillas to retaliate against military forces, the rebels “resort to inflicting harm and divert (commit) atrocities,” particularly on government projects and civilians in far-flung areas. CDG/rga
