On Feb. 1, 1854, the first stamp from the Philippines was issued. It featured the Spanish queen, Isabela II, whose image was based on stamps issued from Spain and was engraved and printed in Manila. The issuance was in compliance with a royal decree from Madrid on Jan. 12, 1853, calling for the printing and sale of stamps for use within the Philippines.—Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
