SURIGAO CITY – Rain and strong wind battered the island of Siargao in Surigao del Norte as Tropical Depression Auring made a landfall on Sunday afternoon.
But Kara Ahorro, a resident in Siargao , the surfing capital of Mindanao, said it was “not scary at all.”
Siargao residents are used to big waves and heavy rain.
“I also went to the sea to check. The waves were the same with seasonal waves. Nothing to be wary of so far,” Ahorro, told the Inquirer.
Rain has also stopped in the provinces of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley, which are prone to flooding and landslides. But disaster officials in these provinces, said they will continue to monitor other remote areas.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that at 4 p.m. Sunday, the center of tropical depression was estimated at in the vicinity of Cagdianao, Dinagat Islands.
Auring has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, moving northwest at 9 kph.
Storm Signal No. 1 was hoisted over the following areas:
Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Provinces, Southern Leyte, Cebu, Guimaras, Southern part of Iloilo and Southern part of Antique;
Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island, Dinagat Province, Misamis Oriental and Camiguin.
Tropical cyclone warning signals elsewhere were lifted, Pagasa said.
