LUCENA CITY, Quezon – After pounding Bicol region on Christmas Day, Typhoon “Nina” (international name: Nock-Ten) crept up to Quezon province early dawn Monday where at least 10,500 residents had been preemptively evacuated by authorities.
Quoting reports from police stations in 39 towns and two cities as of 2 a.m., Senior Supt. Rhoderick Armamento, Quezon police director, said these evacuees were in the towns of Agdangan, Atimonan, Buenavista, Catanauan, Genenal Luna, Guinayangan, Gumaca, Lopez, Macalelon, Mauban, Mulanay, Perez, Plaridel, Patnanungan, Sariaya, Quezon, Tagkawayan and the cities of Lucena and Tayabas.
Power was cut off in the nine towns of Atimonan, Buenavista, Catanuan, General Luna, Guinayangan, Padre Burgos, Pitogo, San Narciso and San Francisco due to the typhoon. Police reported that 201 sea travelers and nine vehicles bound for Marinduque island have been stranded at Lucena pier.
“No casualties have been reported. We’re ready to meet all emergencies,” Henry Buzar, Quezon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) officer, said in a phone interview.
Strong winds and rains have started to batter some towns in southern Quezon.
“It is a supertyphoon. Brace yourself and pray. Do not wander-out. For those who cannot evacuate, secure your abode,” Buzar posted his public advisory on his Facebook page.
