Magnitude 5.3 quake jolts Surigao del Norte

DAVAO CITY – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook Surigao City and several other Surigao del Norte areas and Visayas areas around 4:44 a.m. Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In a report on its website, Phivolcs said the epicenter of the tremor, which was tectonic in origin, was traced 14 kilometers northwest of Sta. Monica town on Siargao Island.

Phivolcs said the earthquake had a depth of 48 kilometers and no damage was expected.

The quake was also felt at Intensity 4 in Santa Monica, Burgos, Dapa and Socorro, Surigao del Norte; Dinagat and Loreto in Dinagat Islands; Mayorga, Leyte; and San Juan and Pintuyan in Southern Leyte. It was Intensity 3 in Cagayan De Oro City; Butuan City; and Palo, Leyte; Intensity 2 in Cebu City and Intensity 1 in Lapu-lapu City.

Phivolcs said aftershocks were to be expected. CDG/rga
