Metro Briefs: 2 more DUI cases reported in Quezon City

Two men, one of them a youth leader who was a peace advocate, were gunned down in separate incidents by unidentified assailants in Quezon City over the weekend.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) probers described the cases as deaths under investigation (DUI).

At 1:20 a.m. on Monday, barangay security officers in Commonwealth found the body of a still unidentified man slumped on the sidewalk of Pacamara Street.

The victim, dressed in a pink undershirt, a black jacket and blue jeans, was between 60 and 65 years old and 5 feet tall.

Found on his body was a note saying he was a drug pusher and beside it, two cartridges from a .45-cal. pistol.

On Friday night, Yasser Mangelen, chair of the Quezon City chapter of United Youth for Peace and Development, was gunned down at close range by a man on a motorcycle.

The shooting happened just minutes after he said his prayers at a mosque on Basilan Street in Salaam Compound, Barangay Culiat.

The 35-year-old victim and his friends were resting at a covered court in front of the mosque at 8:20 p.m. when one of two men on a motorcycle shot him, hitting him in the head and shoulder.

None of the witnesses was able to get the motorcycle’s license plate. —JOVIC YEE

Makati’s actual revenue collections up 12 percent

Makati City has posted a 12 percent increase in actual revenue collections from July to November this year compared to the same period last year.

“We achieved a remarkable 25.6 percent increase in revenues from real property tax, while business tax collection increased by 7 percent since I assumed office in July,” Mayor Abby Binay said.

She also assured residents that no tax hike would be implemented next year.

According to City Treasurer officer in charge Jesusa Cuneta, total revenues reached almost P4.3 billion from July to November with the bulk coming from business (P2.5 billion) and realty taxes (P1.06 billion).

Binay said the total revenue collection of P14.38 billion since January has already exceeded this year’s estimated income by 10 percent. —ERIKA SAULER
