According to statistics from the National Statistics Office, in 2009 there was a 3.5 percent increase in the number of reported deaths nationwide compared with 464,581 in 2008. The registered deaths for 2009 reached 480,820, which resulted in a crude death rate of 5.2 deaths per 1,000 population.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
