Drug surrenderer gunned down in Davao del Norte
TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte—Unidentified assailants shot dead a confessed drug user here late Thursday, police said Friday.
Daniel Mendez, 30, died from several gunshot wounds after being attacked by two suspects on a motorcycle at Purok (Community) Malinawon in Barangay (Village) Magugpo East around 5:45 p.m., according to Supt. Laudemer Laude, city police chief.
The victim, who was among the more than 4,000 self-confessed drug personalities who had turned themselves in to authorities last August, was sitting on his parked motorcycle when shot by the suspects – who arrived on another motorbike, Laude said.
The assailants then sped off to an unknown direction.
“He was the first drug [surrenderer] killed here,” the city police chief told the Inquirer by phone. “We had not received any report if the victim had gotten involved with drugs again after he surrendered,” added Laude.
The police official said an investigation was underway./rga
