Students fold peace cranes

BACOLOD CITY—Students of St. Joseph School-La Salle have a different way of standing up against extrajudicial killings and the culture of death.

The school’s more than 1,000 students have made about 20,000 paper cranes.

Before the papers were folded using the art of origami, the students wrote their prayers to ask for peace in the country.

Bro. Manny Hilado, the school president, said he introduced paper peace cranes as a creative form of prayer.

He said that considering the age of the students, “the best way we think could move these young people from reflection to action is through prayer.”

“We should think of prayer and fasting as possible parts of our response to the situation. Jesus did say that there are spirits who cannot be driven away except by prayer and fasting,” Hilado said.

He said the project started before the semestral break in October.
