CEBU CITY—Mayor Tomas Osmeña has given his word not to use public funds to host candidates of the Miss Universe beauty pageant who are expected to make a stopover in the city as part of pre-pageant activities.
“Cebuanos will desire to showcase solidarity as a people,” said the mayor. “Since this is 100-percent funded by the private sector, may I request our business leaders and associates to show their support as co-sponsors,” he said at a press conference on Friday.
The candidates would get a taste of Cebuano delicacies like roasted pig (lechon), sundried rabbit fish (danggit), pork skin crackling (chicharon) during their visit here, which would be dubbed “Cebu Festive Lunch.”
Osmeña said the private sector should support the activity to ensure that the city government does not use its funds.
Arthur Lo, corporate liaison officer of Jpark, the venue of the candidates’ visit, said the event would be one of the pre-pageant highlights which would be open to the public.
Lo said organizers are inviting restaurants and other business establishments to sponsor the event and get a chance to showcase their products.
But due to limited slots, Lo said it would be on a first come, first serve basis.
Justin Uy, chair and president of Jpark, said the event would promote Filipino cuisine.
“This is the best time to let the girls try Filipino food and spread the news about what’s good in Cebuano and Filipino food,” he said.
Osmeña said local government units don’t really have the budget to promote themselves internationally.
