3 soldiers wounded in Basilan blast

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Three soldiers were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off in Lamitan City on Monday.

Major Filemon Tan Jr., spokesperson of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, said elements of the 14th Scout Ranger Coy were conducting foot patrol in Barangay (village) Sabong around 9:15 a.m. when the explosion took place.

The military has been conducting operations in Basilan and in Sulu in a bid to stamp out the group engaged in kidnappings, piracy and terrorism.

“They were hit by improvised explosive device and three of our Rangers were wounded,” Tan said.

The 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion quickly dispatched a reinforcement and rescued the wounded soldiers, he said.

They were initially brought to the Lamitan Hospital before being transported to the military hospital here. RAM/rga
