Classes suspended as flash flood hits Sorsogon

LEGAZPI CITY – Low-lying areas in Sorsogon province have experienced flash floods due to incessant rains brought by an Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, prompting authorities to suspend classes at the elementary level there.

Raden Dimaano, Sorsogon Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council Officer, said elementary classes were suspended in Barcelona and Pilar Thursday morning.

“In Castilla town, classes at all levels were cancelled as heavy rains continue to pour down,” Dimaano said in a phone interview.

He said the overflowing of canals  caused the flash floods in Sorsogon City. No landslides were reported.

“We are strictly monitoring the villages in Juban and Irosin where the river is already swollen. So far there’s no threat of possible lahar flow from Mt. Bulusan,” Dimaano said.
