Pregnant Cavite woman becomes 2nd Zika case in Calabarzon

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna—The Department of Health in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon (Calabarzon) recorded the second case of Zika virus infection in the region on Saturday after a pregnant woman from Cavite province tested positive for the virus.

The woman, who is from Bacoor City, Cavite, is currently under surveillance by health officials, said Dr. Rio Magpantay, director of the DOH in Calabarzon.

Cavite Governor Jesus Crispin Remulla, in a separate text message, said the woman is pregnant but did not say how far along.

In a phone interview Saturday, Magpantay said the woman showed flu-like symptoms and underwent tests at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City.

The first case of mosquito-borne Zika virus in the region was a woman from Antipolo, Rizal who tested positive last month.

Magpantay declined to say at the moment whether the Antipolo woman was also pregnant.

“We will give more details later on as surveillance continues,” he said.
