Glenda Blackwell of Leicester, North Carolina, USA, had always been admonishing her husband that gambling was nothing but “a waste of money.” Wanting to teach him a lesson by scratching a lottery card in front of him and thinking that it would bring no win, she got the surprise of her life. She won a whopping $1 million (P48.4 million) and had to eat her words.
“I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating,” Blackwell told ABC affiliate WLOS. “So, I was very happy.”
On Saturday, Blackwell’s husband, Buddy, asked her to purchase two Powerball tickets from Suttles Quik Mart. To protest this, she bought a $10 Carolina Millions scratch card and scratched it in front of him.
Blackwell, 57, elucidated, “I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch-off to show him they didn’t hit.”
“Sometimes I get aggravated with him, so I tell him, ‘You’re just wasting your money,'” she added.
To the couple’s surprise, Blackwell “had to eat her words” when the card she scraped had the glistening jackpot prize.
After traveling to claim her prize in the capital state of Raleigh, she chose the lump sum, which amounted to $415,503 (P20 million) after taxes, instead of 20 yearly payments of $50,000, noting that her health issues might curtail her life.
